Canada Exhibition

On the 27th of July this year I left Australian shores to go on a month long trip backpacking across Canada from West to East. The purpose of the trip was to meet up with many of the Canadian friends I made while backpacking through Europe in 2007 for 5 months. The other reason was to photograph everyday Canadians and their landscape and try and find out what traits make them up. Canadians are some of the most friendly people I have ever met in my life, it would not matter if I was in a back alley of Vancouver or on a mountain path in the Rockies, they would still offer you a hello and a genuine smile.

The places I stayed along the way and the people I met made me feel at home, so at home in fact I have decided to move to Vancouver for 2 years in April next year. The hospitality and generosity is something I wont forget.

The reason for wanting to hold an exhibition of the people of Canada is because of this. I want to give Canberrans an idea of who these people are and what they have to offer. The landscapes in which these people live is also quite fascinating. From living in a cabin amongst the bears in Jasper National park to a house on the prairies in Saskatoon or in an apartment in Quebec City, the landscape is as vast as it is beautiful.

I am only half way through processing the trip so I have not decided on the images yet but have a rough idea. I shot 7500 photos and have thus far flagged 1200 of them. The culling process to get to my final 16 images will be a grueling task but one which should produce some quality, insightful pictures.

I have booked Cafe Yala at Reid CIT for the exhibition location, opening on the 9th of November. So please keep the date free so you can come along for a drink and some nibblies.
